[OOP 2011] Protect your Privacy

At the OOP 2011 I am honored to have Balachander Krishnamurthy of AT&T Labs-Research on the program on the topic of "Privacy Leakage on the Internet". His talk is on Tuesday (Jan. 25, 2011) morning.
So many of us meanwhile are acctive in online social networks (OSNs) and there are large differences in how the various OSNs deal with privacy, in particular how much of it can "leak" out that you are not aware of or that you would not approve of. He extends this also into the area of mobile OSNs. A special section addresses the architectural issues on where to provide privacy (e.g. browser vs. gateways). He summarizes what to watch for, what common misconceptions are and future directions.
I can highly recommend it!

[OOP 2011] Happy Birthday OOP !

It is hard (especially for me) to imagine, but the OOP is celebrating it's 20th birthday at the next OOP Jan. 24-28, 2011 (www.oop2011.de). This fact motivated me to do my part to offer you a particularly strong program.

We have 8 keynote speakers and a very up-to-date and broad conference program.
The keynotes are (in alphabetical order)
- Scott Berkun, well-known author and public speaker on "Myths of Innovation"
- Andrew Brownsword, Chief Architect at Electronic Arts on "Software Architecture in Game Development"
- Tom DeMarco of the Atlantic Systems Guild and a pioneer of many important topics including people-related topics on "The Collaborative Design Imperative"
- Ralph de Wargny of Intel on the topic of Multi-core
- Martin Fowler of Thoughtworks on "Software Design in the 21st Century"
- Erich Gamma, IBM, a Software-Pioneer of multiple topics, on "Design Patterns - Past, Present & Future"
- Rainer Grau, Zühlke, on Change and Change Management
- Kevlin Henney, on "97 Things Every Programmer Should Know"

I am proud to be able to offer these keynotes -- all are great speakers and the mix of topics is very fitting to the broad set of topics addressed by the OOP. From Innovation to Programming and from Bits&Bytes to People and a strong focus on design and architecture.

Although we have always stayed current with the actual software trend topics and have broadened the scope considerably since the first OOP, the concept of bringing internationally renowned, practically oriented speakers together in a forum where one can meet and discuss the latest topics remains stable. I very much look forward to seeing many of you, both long-time friends and colleagues as well as recent and first-time attendees to the OOP.

[OOP 2010] Top International Speakers at the OOP

Jan Bosch holds the opening session of the Product-Line-Engineering (PLE) track on Wednesday and also has a talk in the Architekturtag on Thursday.

Nenad Medvidovic has two presentations, one in PLE-Track on a framework for modeling product lines and the other (on non-functional properties) in the architecture track.

Eric Evans on Domain-Driven Design in 2 half-day workshops (morning basic, afternoon strategy) on Friday.

Gregor Hohpe has a presentation in the architecture track on Distributed Computing the Google Way and one in the SOA track on Coupling, Messaging, and Conversations.

[OOP 2010] Software Reuse and Product Line Engineering

It is clear that it is essential to have a solid foundation when building a complex software-based system and this is particularly true when using this foundation as the common basis of a set of products or systems.
But the benefits in terms of reduced effort, reduced time-to-market and increased quality are high -- if one is able to do it right. And that is what you can learn at the OOP.

At the OOP we have a 2-day track, organized and moderated by Christa Schwanninger, on Product Line Engineering (PLE) headed by an opening track-keynote by Jan Bosch on Software Product Lines. The second day of the track focusses on the modelling aspects and includes presentations by Markus Völter, Peter Manhart (Daimler), and Neno Medvidovic, a software architecture specialist from the University of Southern California. In the night school on Wednesday night we offer a PLE-Tutorial by Prof. Klaus Schmid. In this track we address many aspects of PLE including the technology, the business case, concrete examples, and future directions of this important topic area.

The OOP 2010 conference program is now online.

The conference motto is "Productivity: People, Process, and Technology" and we will show how many of the topics this conference addresses relate to increased productivity. The OOP also has many sessions on current topics like dynamic languages, cloud computing, and multicore.

[OOP 2009] Teamwork Prevails

TEAM: -- Together Everyone Achieves More

The pressure that built up before the OOP is finally gone and I am looking forward to the next one. We took some risks with different formats of presentations and also extending the conference into the area of "soft skills", but (judging by the feedback) both of those were well accepted.

I really appreciate the teamwork-atmosphere of the OOP. Not only of the speakers and the SIGS-DATACOM team but also of the attendees. There is such an open and trustful atmosphere at the OOP -- it is a real pleasure to be a part of it and feel comfortable enough to try new ideas there.

In particular, I hope the participants benefitted from the "soft skills" topics so that they learned some techniques how to convince their colleagues and management to try new ("hard skills") technology ideas.

[OOP 2009] Intakte Teams im Takt

As the motto of the OOP 2009 says: Soft(ware) skills are the key to successful projects. Persons with excellent soft skills are often those with a great deal of experience, partly based on lessons learned from mistakes of the past. But you can speed up your acquisition of softs skills. The first step is to be aware that it is an important issue (many projects fail for soft skill related reasons rather than technical ones). And to become aware of what are important aspects to address and improve (you can learn that e.g. at the soft skills track of the OOP). And finally, you need experience.

How to get a faster start to the necessary experience in softskills?
In part, by attending the "Soft Skills + Social Behavior" half-day session on the Friday of OOP (Fr1 (morning) or Fr8 (afternoon).

This is a very special session at the OOP. Please don't miss this unique opportunity.
Learn soft softskills and how to manage by conducting a set of real musicians (and then try to use some of those techniques on your project team when you are back in the office). Roderick Shaw, a renowned conductor, is one of the key moderators of this session.

Hello!
Welcome to the OOP TechChair Blog.
I plan to post updates to the conference program here and look forward to seeing you at the conference in January 2009 in Munich. The conference program is meanwhile online at http://www.oopconference.com. We have a broad set of topics, ranging from softskills to more hardcore technical topics and from management to coding, for beginner to advanced.
